Bloomers! has seized the opportunity to help support the expansions of youth gardening programs sprouting up nationwide by designing home and school garden programs + products that easily promote healthy living for young kids. Recent studies prove that school-based garden and nutrition education programs positively impact the adoption of healthy eating habits; children are more likely to try new fruits and vegetables if they grow them themselves. Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence is important for proper growth and development and can actually prevent health problems such as obesity, dental caries, iron deficiency, and osteoporosis.
With Bloomers! children learn by doing with our ‘hands-on’ and immersive approach to healthy eating through creating real-life and virtual playgrounds where can have direct experiences with the magic of nature. The healthful diet and exercise practices children learn through a garden-based education, planted like the seeds in your garden, will continue to grow into life-long habits that can be effective weapons in the fight against childhood and, ultimately help create a healthier population.
The Bloomers! Schoolyard program takes a coordinated approach to help children improve their health, developmental and educational challenges, through creating an interactive game that links nutrition + environmental education with technology so children can keep playing, growing and learning at home, at school, online and even outside. Bloomers! Island playground helps support the school garden education as they begin to make sense of their real-life learning experiences through avatar role playing, online game-play, storybooks, and endless adventure.
Together, with the help of Schools, Educators, Parents and Bloomers! Schoolyard program we can reverse the poor nutrition habits of our nation, through allowing children the opportunity to grow a vegetable garden and learn healthy eating practices that will last a lifetime. Bloomers! Schoolyard is making it fun, easy and more affordable than ever before to start a school garden and improve the health of your students.
Our Generational Challenge
Our youth suffers from double-digit obesity rates due to poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. The need to educate children about nutrition is vital. Children who are hungry or poorly nourished do less well in school, both academically and behaviorally. Furthermore, it is proven that these preferences “persist longer when nutrition education is accompanied by gardening activities as compared to nutrition education alone.” However in order to help reverse the obesity trend in the U.S. we must first understand how children become obese or overweight in the first places is the first important step toward breaking the poor nutrition cycles. Childhood obesity is caused by eating too much and exercising too little. Fundamentally parents and caregivers are responsible for their children’s health and development, because they instill and promote certain values, reward or reinforce specific behaviors, and your child’s behaviors and thus choices.
Half of US children are overweight. Bloomers! does not attempt to solve the child obesity challenge. Rather, we aim to get children to eat vegetables. We look at eating healthier as a habit not a discipline. And like most habits – they are easier to adopt as a young child. Although half of our plates should be filled with fruits and vegetables, 5-9 servings per day, the majority of children go without eating even one serving of fruits and vegetables a day. This is the first generation of Americans at risk of having a lower life expectancy than their parents.
If you ask many young child where food comes from, the most common answer is the grocery store. Understanding where food comes from and how fruits and vegetables are harvested is essential to understanding better nutritional values and practices. The more exposure and understanding of this, the better chance a child has at eating healthier and avoiding bad food habits.
Schools are in a unique position to promote healthy eating and help ensure appropriate food and nutrient intake among students. Schools provide students with opportunities that enable students to learn about and practice healthy eating behaviors. School gardens are being integrated into the educational curriculum to teach children not only about gardening and plants but other subjects as well. The school vegetable garden is an effective way to get kids moving, teach nutrition education, and promote healthy eating habits. School garden can help children understand the concept of citizenship and their place in the environment because it allows them the opportunity to watch seeds turn into edible plants that will nourish them.
